For Maersk Drilling, part of the Maersk Group, the challenge was to inspire skilled professionals to join one of the most advanced drilling operations in the world. The goal was not simply to fill positions, but to reimagine how offshore work is perceived – to show that behind the vast machinery and the open sea lies a world of innovation, precision and human ingenuity.
The question was simple but profound. How do you make people feel the intensity, scale and pride of working on a rig when most have never set foot on one?
The answer was Experience The Rig – an immersive 360º recruitment concept designed to bring Maersk Drilling’s world to life and allow people to see, hear and feel what it means to operate at the frontier of offshore energy.
Offshore drilling is an environment shrouded in mystery. To most, it appears as a silhouette on the horizon – remote, mechanical, and inaccessible. Yet for those who work there, it is a highly collaborative ecosystem built on technology, safety and shared expertise.
To attract the right talent, Maersk Drilling needed to reveal this world – not through statistics or job listings, but through experience. The idea was to let people step inside the operation, understand its rhythm, and feel the human dimension of a place often misunderstood.
Immersive Recruitment
Experience the Rig used high-fidelity 360º photography, immersive sound design and interactive storytelling to recreate the experience of being onboard a Maersk jack-up rig in the challenging waters of the North Sea. Visitors could navigate freely through the environment using a street-view style interface, guided by the sounds and visuals that define daily life offshore.
Hotspots revealed deeper layers of information – the automated deck systems that drive both efficiency and safety, the technology that enables faster and more precise drilling, and the communications that link offshore teams to operations on land. Through integrated video stories, real Maersk crew members introduced their world first-hand – managers, engineers and mechanics sharing how they live, work and collaborate on the rig.
The experience was designed as an invitation to explore. Each space revealed a different facet of Maersk Drilling’s culture – the decision-making under pressure, the importance of safety, the reliance on teamwork, and the commitment to innovation that defines every task. Visitors could see not only what happens on a rig, but why it happens, and how each role contributes to a larger purpose.
By combining rich visuals with spatial sound and intuitive navigation, Experience the Rig offered a rare perspective – one that celebrated the precision and complexity of offshore operations while capturing the spirit of the people who make them possible.
Rather than showing a career path, it showed a world – one where technology and human capability work in unison, where conditions are extreme but the culture is collaborative, and where progress depends on both machinery and mindset.
Experience the Rig embodied the values that define Maersk Drilling – innovation, efficiency and a drive to push boundaries in even the harshest environments. It demonstrated that joining Maersk is not only about working offshore, but about being part of an organisation that thrives on challenge, embraces new technology and operates at the edge of possibility.
In essence, the concept transformed recruitment into storytelling. It translated an extraordinary workplace into an experience that could be felt, not just imagined – giving future talent a true sense of the scale, ambition and humanity that power Maersk Drilling.
